History Of Lvov – Continuation

As I wrote at my first post about “The history of Lvov” (about half a year ago) Lvov was founded in the middle of the 13th century by Daniil Romanovich, Prince of Galicia and Volhynia, and named in honour of his son Lev. The town is first mentioned in the ancient chronicles of Galicia and Volhynia in 1256, During the second half of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries Lvov was constantly assaulted by Tartar-Mongol hordes and by Polish, Hungarian and Llthuaman invaders. At the end of the 14th century It became a stronghold of the Polish feudal lords who dominated Eastern Galicia until 1772 when, following the first partition of Poland it fell to the Austrian. Between 1919 and 1939 Lvov was the third largest Polish city (after capital of Poland – Warszawa and Lodz). During the Soviet invasion of Poland at 1939, the Soviet Union occupaid Lvov which became the capial of “Lvov Oblast“. At the beggining of “Operation Barbarossa” ( at June 1941), Lvov was occupaid by Germans Army. At 1944 at “Sandomierz Offensive” opperation Lvov was retaken by the Soviet Union.

Lvov suffered a lot during the World War Two. During the German army occupation – Nazis created the Lvov Ghetto, housing about 120,000 Jews. Almost all were killed.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union (at 1991), Ukraine become independent, while Lvov became one of it’s cultural centers.
